The approach road to Cenes de la Vega climbs fast. By the time the launch site at 1,250 metres comes into view, Granada has already shrunk to rooftops and the Alhambra towers, red and compact, are sitting almost at the same level as you. A few minutes later, running downhill into the wind with a certified pilot behind you, they're below.
The flight
Granada Paragliding is the main operator here, certified and with pilots who fly in English, French, and Spanish. They run four packages: Introductory (€120, around 10 minutes), Adventure (€140), Action (€160), and Granada's Balcony (€180, the full 40-minute flight that gives the best thermal work and the widest view of the city). Most first-timers book the Adventure or Action package, which gives enough time to stop gripping the harness and actually look around.
Other operators working the same launch sites include Andaventur, Parapente Tropical, and Andfly. Prices are broadly similar. If you book through a platform, check that your pilot holds a RFAE licence; any reputable operator will confirm this without being asked.
The flight itself runs 10 to 40 minutes depending on the package. Thermals rise off the rock faces of the Sierra Nevada and the flat Vega plain below, and the pilot can hold altitude without effort, moving laterally across the valley and sometimes gaining height in the warm columns of rising air. The Alhambra sits to the north-east, the cathedral dome is visible further into the city, and on clear days the Vega de Granada extends west toward Loja in a grid of irrigation channels and olive rows.
Total time including transfer to the launch site is 1.5 to 2 hours. Most operators collect passengers from central Granada or arrange to meet at Cenes de la Vega directly.
Practicalities
Weight limits run from roughly 30 to 130 kg; confirm with your operator at booking, not at the launch site. Comfortable clothing and sports shoes are the main requirements. At 1,250 metres even a warm day in the city will feel noticeably cooler, so a light layer in the bag is worth it. Sunscreen matters more than most people expect at that altitude.
HD and 4K photo and video packages cost €20–30 extra. The pilot typically attaches a camera to the wing or harness, and the footage is considerably more useful than anything you could capture yourself while managing the harness for the first time.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) give the most consistent thermals. Summer works but afternoon heat builds turbulence by midday; morning slots are better. Winter flights happen but depend heavily on Sierra Nevada weather and wind direction.
If you want to combine the flight with other outdoor activities in the province, the best things to do in Granada guide covers the full range, and the Costa Tropical day trip pairs well with a paragliding morning at La Herradura.
