The Costa Tropical sits 65 km south of Granada and holds a claim that surprises most visitors: the warmest year-round seawater in mainland Spain. In winter the Mediterranean drops to 12°C off Barcelona. At La Herradura it rarely falls below 15°C, and in July and August it reaches 24–26°C. A guided kayak tour from Activ8You turns that warm water into a two-and-a-half-hour circuit of cliffs, sea caves, and small beaches that you cannot reach any other way.
The Cerro Gordo coastline
The Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Park runs east from La Herradura toward Nerja. The cliffs reach 75 metres in places, cutting straight into the sea and leaving no room for a coastal path. Below the waterline, the water clarity is good enough to see the bottom at 10 metres. The Costa Tropical day trip section of Granada's coast is among the least developed in Andalusia: no concrete promenade, no beach bars, just the cliff face and the water.
Tours follow the base of the park's shoreline east from La Herradura, rounding small headlands to reach coves that are otherwise inaccessible. The sea caves are the specific draw. Some are open grottoes, 10 to 15 metres deep, where the swell echoes. A few are wide enough to paddle inside and turn around. The geology is limestone, which means the cave openings are irregular and interesting rather than uniform.
Snorkelling is optional and depends on the group. The sea floor under the cliffs has sponges, anemones, and sea urchins. Visibility varies with conditions but is typically 8–12 metres in summer.
What the 2.5-hour tour covers
Activ8You operates from Zona Náutica, on the seafront at Paseo Andrés Segovia 61, 18697 La Herradura. The tour begins with a 15-minute briefing on paddling technique and safety. Equipment is a sit-on-top kayak (stable, easy to remount if you fall off), paddle, and lifejacket. Snorkel gear comes with the booking.
The paddle itself runs 6–8 km at a relaxed pace, with stops at the caves and coves along the Cerro Gordo coast. The guide keeps the group together and chooses the route based on sea conditions. When the sea is calm, you get further into the caves. When there is any swell, the guide keeps a safe distance from the cliff base.
You do not need prior kayaking experience. Sit-on-top kayaks are forgiving. The main requirement is being comfortable in open water with a lifejacket on; basic swimming ability is recommended. The tour is not suitable for people with back problems (prolonged paddling posture), and the maximum weight capacity is 130 kg per person.
The tour costs €30 per person. Book through the booking platforms listed below or directly at the Zona Náutica. Arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled departure.
When to go
The water is warmest July through September: 22–26°C, good visibility, typically calm mornings. These months are also the busiest; tours fill up and the La Herradura beach itself gets crowded. May and June offer water at 18–20°C with far fewer people and stable conditions. October is viable and quiet, water still above 20°C most of the month.
Winter tours run but the water drops to 14–15°C and a wetsuit becomes useful. Spring is the best window for day trips from Granada: the coast road is quiet, almond trees on the hillsides above the cliffs are in flower through February and March, and the water temperature is already warmer than summer in northern Europe.
Tours run subject to sea conditions. Strong easterly winds (the levante) can make the Cerro Gordo stretch too rough for guided tours, so there is always a small cancellation risk in late autumn. Mornings are generally calmer than afternoons along this stretch of coast.
Getting there and booking
La Herradura is 65 km from Granada: take the A-44 south toward Motril, then the N-340 coastal road. The drive takes 45–50 minutes without traffic. Parking is available near the beach and the Zona Náutica. There is no direct bus service timed for morning tours; car or transfer is the practical option.
Book through Manawa, Yumping, or Reserving, or contact Activ8You directly via the Zona Náutica. Advance booking is strongly recommended in July and August. For shoulder season visits, two or three days' notice is usually enough.
