Los Manueles: Legendary Croquetas Since 1917 on Reyes Católicos

Trading since 1917

Los Manueles has been on Calle Reyes Católicos since 1917, which puts it among the oldest continuously operating bars in Granada. The street it sits on is one of the main arteries of Centro, running from Plaza Isabel la Católica up toward Gran Vía, and the bar has watched over a century of the city pass by its door.

The décor reflects that history: old ceramic tiles on the walls, wooden fittings that have not been updated for effect, framed photographs and memorabilia that accumulated rather than being curated. Nothing here is staged.

In Granada, every drink order comes with a free tapa, and Los Manueles takes the tradition seriously. The free tapas cycle through a rotation, but the bar's reputation rests mainly on one thing.

The croquetas

The croquetas gigantes are the reason most people come. They are genuinely oversized: one croqueta is roughly the size of a large fist. The filling is jamón ibérico and béchamel, properly seasoned, with a crust that cracks without crumbling. Two of them constitute a meal.

On a busy evening, the croquetas appear as free tapas with drinks. If you want to guarantee them, order a racion rather than waiting to see what comes with your glass. The boquerones en vinagre are also worth ordering: the anchovies are cured in-house and served properly sharp.

The bar atmosphere

Los Manueles draws a mix of older locals who have been coming for decades and visitors who read about the croquetas. The two groups coexist without friction. The bar gets loud at peak times, particularly weekend lunchtimes between 14:00 and 16:00. The staff manage the volume with matter-of-fact efficiency.

The space has a back section that is slightly quieter than the bar itself. Worth heading there if you want to sit down with a plate of jamón and a glass of wine rather than standing at the counter.
